I was super cheap and didnt realize how great gem gloves were and wasnt even using those for a long time. When I first started i took mining/smithing right away, which was fortunate, and selling silver, then gold bars kept me afloat.
Since i jumped right in, I made some poor choices early on and took some skills that were not useful, so, my experience may be helpful. When i first started I just went straight to adventure mode where im currently at what appears to be 'mid game' (im at total level ~1350), where i have some level 99s and need to start working on drops/clearing content.
I have access to summoning and potions as well as a decent amount of skills now (which is why unlocking prayer requires 50 million) and I figured that someone might know something that the wiki and my poor google skills were not finding. So while I am fine leaving the game to mine, refreshing the glove charges and selling gems and ores a few times a day, I can't help but feel that I am missing something obvious. The only other way that didn't require level 99 was with trees (farming nests) but that has been patched so it makes nowhere near as much money now and it barely gives enough seeds to keep the potion going too. The wiki points towards various ways to make money, but they all seem to be outdated (or at least not re-confirmed) and require level 99 in everything, which requires level 99 combat in adventure mode and I made the mistake of not unlocking prayers until now so it makes raising combat level a lot harder (I am at 76 for now). I mean, you can make some money through other means but for the large amounts you need to unlock more skills I have not seen any other way that works. My only real issue so far is that the only way to really make money seems to be mining with the gem gloves. After getting through the basics, I started a second character in adventure mode, which sounded fun.
